Dukes cheerleaders are getting a head start with rallying for Wellington football stars as the two teams share the Dickson Street field for early season practice.

This year’s focus for the 14 varsity girls and the nine junior varsity girls is to promote Dukes Pride throughout the community — not just in the Wellington Schools.

They will sell tickets for a “Spirit Couch” raffle at home games. Lucky winners will watch the games from the end zone on a couch and get half-time treats.

Cheerleaders will also pick a student and community member to be the “Fans of the Week.”

Coach Deb Kimmich said she’s proud of the work the girls have put in already this year. The veteran cheerers hardly took a break during the summer months as they helped teach younger girls in cheer camps, worked at festivals, and attended camps themselves.

Kimmich sad she’s also proud of sophomore Miranda McDonnell, who was named All-American Cheerleader by the United Spirit Association.

Kimmich said this year’s squad captains are Jessika Antill, Gina Russo, and Olivia Bradstock.

They will keep a watchful eye over the varsity girls as captains Megan McGuire and Whitney Cole direct the junior varsity squad.
