There have been a number of recent news articles and commentary in this newspaper and elsewhere mentioning local business owner Leo Hawk.

Mr. Hawk, the Hawk family and their charitable foundation – AR-HALE – have been extraordinarily generous supporters of local non-profits and other public and private institutions of a civic nature throughout the Lima/Allen County area. That support spans decades, including times when the area’s economic and cultural prospects appeared bleak.

The Lima Symphony Orchestra is one such institution that has benefitted enormously from the contributions of money, time and advice from Mr. Hawk, his wife Arlene and other family members. This support has come without publicity or reciprocity, only from the unself-interested generosity of a family with few peers in its dedication to the betterment of Lima.

On behalf of the LSO, our board and patrons, we wish to thank Leo, Mrs. Hawk and their family. Without their support and personal friendship, we would not be the institution we are, and Lima would be the poorer for it.

— Kevin Hawley, LSO board oresident; Elizabeth Brown, executive director; Crafton Beck, artistic director/conductor
