This letter is in regards to the front page photo in the Thursday, May 29th edition of the Lima News accompanying a story concerning Grand Lake St. Marys. I live on Grand Lake St. Marys and I believe the photo was a very poor representation of the state of the lake and gave the impression that it is an unused, vacant, dangerous place to be. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The photographer and whoever chose the picture for the front page apparently did so for shock value or comedic purposes with no regard to how misleading the image might be. Where are the pictures from the previous holiday weekend with hundreds of folks boating, tubing fishing, riding jet skis and yes, even swimming in the lake? The weekend prior to that more than 500 people were on the lake participating in 3 separate fishing tournaments. Didn’t see those photos. On any summer weekend you will find crowds at the many restaurants, clubs and bars that surround the lake, enjoying live music and having fun.

We know there is much work to be done to improve the water quality of Grand Lake St. Marys. Many projects are underway but it will take time for the efforts to show significant results. In the meantime many of us are still making use of this incredible natural resource and shame on you for making it appear that is not so.

Livin’ on the lake and lovin’ it,

— Donna Grube, St. Marys
