LIMA — Allen County’s unemployment rate dropped from 7.7 percent in November to 7 percent in December and nearly held steady from December 2012’s 7.1 percent.
December 2013 unemployment rates decreased in 75 of the state’s 88 counties, and all nine counties in region, according to numbers released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
The low for the region and the state in December was Mercer County’s 3.8 percent. Mercer and Auglaize County, with 4.6 percent, were among five counties in Ohio with unemployment rates below 5 percent. Eight counties, but none in the region, had unemployment rates above 10 percent. The comparable rate for Ohio in December was 6.6 percent.
Around the region, Auglaize County’s 4.6 percent was a decrease from November’s 5.1 percent and December 2012’s 4.8 percent.
Putnam County’s December rate of 5.7 percent was a decrease from November’s 5.9 percent, but an increase from a year ago, at 5.4 percent.
Van Wert County’s rate of 6.1 percent was a decrease both from November’s 6.8 percent and December 2012’s 7.2 percent.
Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 5,000 over the month, from 5,195,600 in November 2013 to 5,200,600 in December, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with ODJFS.
January 2014 unemployment rates for counties will be available March 11.
