I am assuming many Lima area residents have received letters from AEP Energy asking persons to sign up with them for rates of $5.99 per kilowatt hour through May of 2014. As I am already an AEP Ohio customer, I wondered why I would need to sign up for this. However, when I called the AEP Energy phone number, listed on the letter, I learned; only after some detailed questioning, that AEP Energy and AEP Ohio are two separate companies even though AEP Energy uses the same logo as AEP Ohio.

The details of the differences for these two companies are quite complicated, so this letter is to alert any persons who have also received the AEP Energy letters, to be aware this company is NOT the same as AEP Ohio. AEP Energy is NOT regulated as is AEP Ohio. AEP Energy is free to change their $5.99 sign-up rate at any time and also to charge installation, disconnection and other fees which you are not told in the AEP Energy letters.

So, I am urging anyone who is considering responding to the AEP Energy letters to check first with your AEP Ohio company before you call and sign up with AEP Energy. Again, AEP Ohio is the regulated, established company, whereas AEP Energy is the new, “unregulated” company. Please do not be mislead by the AEP Energy letters. Check everything, fully, before making any decision.
