WAPAKONETA — Melissa Carlin, the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, introduced herself to the community Thursday evening during an open house at the chamber office.
Carlin is an Elida native, born and raised, and said Wapakoneta isn’t any different than Elida.
“They’re both very welcoming,” she said.
Carlin previously worked for Apria Healthcare in the revenue department.
“I was in management,” she said. “I managed about 30 employees and oversaw about $1 million in accounts receivable.”
Carlin plans to continue that chamber’s “feet in the street” campaign. We go door to door, business to business to see what businesses need to grow and improve, she said. It helps the chamber engage with business owners so they understand what local businesses really need to grow.
Nannette Schneider, the previous Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, said she knew Melissa was the correct choice during the interview, explaining the board of directors felt the same way.
“I recognized her leadership right away,” Schneider said.
There are three important qualities the new executive director needs to have to do the job exceptionally, she explained.
Schneider explained the right choice needed to be a servant, be accountable and need to have the energy to unite the businesses and the community. She said Carlin showed she had all three qualities.
“Since she has started the job she’s shown time and time again she will be accountable for what she does,” Schneider said.
She went on to say, Carlin has proven she’s interested in helping businesses and the community grow and improve and unite to that common goal.
“The community is strong,” Carlin said that was her favorite thing about Wapakoneta. “They all support each other. Businesses support other businesses even when they are selling the same product. That’s rare.”
