LIMA — An exercise routine known by promoters as “the original party workout” is now available to Lima residents.
Jazzercise, a full-body workout that combines dance, strength and resistance training with popular music, is being offered each week at the Leahy Wellness Center in Lima.
The exercise classes were brought to Lima by Tonya Fledderjohann, who also owns Upstage Downtown Dance Theatre in Celina. Fledderjohann has taught Jazzercise for more than five years in Celina, and decided to bring the workout routine to Lima.
“I never expected for a bigger community like Lima to travel to Celina, so I thought I’d bring myself to the community,” Fledderjohann said. “I was very aware that there wasn’t anything like Jazzercise in the immediate area, so I wanted to give it a shot and see what happens.”
Since it’s been around for 45 years, Fledderjohann said Jazzercise is often stigmatized as a fad that died out decades ago. But she hopes that bringing the exercise routine to Lima will help change the perceptions local residents may have.
“You think you know it, but you don’t,” she said. “A lot of times we have the stigma that we’re still wearing leg warmers and shoulder pads, but we left the ’80s behind a long time ago. We’re constantly evolving.”
Today’s Jazzercise classes feature the latest music from a variety of genres, along with new exercise trends.
“We don’t just have high-impact music, we also have country music, pop music and more,” she said. “We also use Pilates- and Yoga-based methods, along with some kickboxing. So it’s a wide variety of music and genres of exercise.”
Fledderjohann said in a one-hour class, participants can expect to burn 800 calories. Along with potential weight loss, she said Jazzercise can strengthen and tone muscles, eliminate stress and help build lifelong friendships.
But the best part, she said, is you don’t have to be an experienced dancer or workout fanatic to get something out of the classes.
“It really is for everyone, whether you want a low-, mid- or high-impact workout,” Fledderjohann said, though she added that the courses are open to men and women ages 16 and up. She said her oldest participant is 65 years old.
Jazzercise classes are held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Mondays, 7:15-8:15 p.m. Tuesdays, 7-8 p.m. Wednesdays and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Fridays. A Monday evening and Saturday morning class will begin March 4. Classes are held weekly at the Leahy Wellness Center, 825 S. Cable Road.
“The first class is free, so there’s nothing to lose,” Fledderjohann said.
