LIMA — New car sales in Allen County were down slightly in January, but local automakers still managed to sell more vehicles than they did through the same month last year.
The number of new vehicles sold in the county was 490 in January, down from 494 in December, according to the Allen County Title Department. That represented a less than 1 percent decrease.
Compared to January 2016, however, new car sales have increased fairly significantly. A total of 358 new cars were sold last January, meaning sales have increased by 36.9 percent.
“Typically, January can be a slower month, and many times weather can be a factor,” said Kris Thompson, manager of the Allen County Title Department. “We had a good January, weather-wise, so we didn’t see much slow down for 2017.
“I’m sure with tax time right around the corner, people will start looking to upgrade [their vehicles] in the coming months.”
The top-selling automaker in Allen County was Honda, which sold 109 new vehicles in January. Ford sold 62 new cars, while Chevrolet sold 25. Honda also sold the most new vehicles in 2016, with 1,341.
However, Ford was the big winner in terms of new and used car sales. Ford sold 274 new and used vehicles in January, while Chevrolet sold 265 and Honda sold 221.
Looking forward, Thompson said year-to-year sales should continue to improve, assuming the economy holds strong.
“Only time will tell,” she said.
