GAHANNA — AEP Ohio announced it is joining forces with more than 80 gas and electric utility companies across the U.S. and Canada to fight scams targeting customers.
The utility industry has designated Nov. 16 as Utilities United Against Scams Day. Criminals are posing as utility company representatives threatening to shut off power unless immediate payment is made or personal information is given.
•Telling customers they need a new electric meter and they must make payment to have it installed.
•Offering a discount if they sign up for auto-pay.
•Demanding that a deposit be made immediately.
AEP Ohio never demands immediate payment, insists on payments with prepaid credit cards, or asks for customers to meet a representative at another location to make payment.
If you receive a suspicious phone call, call local law enforcement and then call AEP Ohio at 800-672-2231.
