LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio held the grand opening of the new student club Racers Station on Tuesday among various area officials and business owners with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new facility located at 1365 N. Cable Road will be open to all UNOH students and will serve as a home base for many campus social activities.

UNOH president Jeffrey Jarvis told the attending crowd that it was a great moment for the university.

“We are very proud of it and we hope you like it,” Jarvis said. “When the site came open, it fit in.”

Jarvis said the site would also occasionally be used for adult events in addition to a center for students.

Included at the new site will be multiple lounge areas, pool tables, a dance floor, performance stage, televisions, video gaming consoles, separate study areas, fire pits and an outdoor dining space. Among events the new center will be able to accommodate will be dances, live music, comedy shows and pool tournaments.

Lima Chamber of Commerce President Jed Metzger congratulated the university on the center.

“You can really enjoy being a student,” Metzger said. “I can’t say enough. We all have to be proud.”

UNOH student activities director Elizabeth Carr said it doubles the size that originally held the student center. The site was located across the street in the UNOH Event Center building. She said the new center would be much better for students.

“It is much safer without crossing Cable Road,” Carr said. “Students will have a better idea of what is going on.”

Carr added that they were able to offer an expansion of the food it can offer with the new location and host larger live music events. Officially, the center has been open to students since Aug. 19.

UNOH Director of Public Relations and Marketing Stephanie Malloy said the center will be open 1 to 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 5 to 11 p.m. Fridays and 5 to 11 p.m. Sundays. It is closed on Saturdays.

“As we get into the new quarter, we will adjust and expand the hours as we see the traffic flow,” Malloy said.

The site replaces the former Club UNOH. The new location will allow for the former student center to be available for rent to the public for personal and social events.
