VAN WERT — A multi-agency investigation was underway after a chemical odor and visible petroleum slick on Van Wert’s Town Creek revealed a gasoline leak into the city’s storm sewer Sunday.
The chemical odor was coming from the area of South Washington Street and Central Avenue, according to the Van Wert City Police Department. Investigators said the source of the leak appeared to be in the 700 block of East Main Street, although the exact amount has not been determined late Sunday.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was dispatched to look into how much gasoline got into the creek. According to the Van Wert Fire Department, it is believed that much of the gasoline was still stagnant in the storm drains.
As of early Sunday evening, East Central Avenue was closed from South Washington Street to South Race Street, with East Main closed from South Harrison Street to South Chestnut Street.
