My son Jeffrey Allen Brinkman served from 1983 to 1987.
He was 18 when he enlisted for four years in the Navy. Jeff did his boot and band camp, both eight weeks, in San Diego. He ended up graduating boot camp and also played drums for their graduation at Murphy Stadium. He grandparents came all the way from Florida for just that one day. Think they were just a bit proud.
Jeff was assigned to the 6th Fleet out of Norfolk, Virginia, on the USS Coral Sea, an aircraft carrier traveling in the Atlantic Ocean. He went to many ports and places but his memories that stand out to him are of the orders he took in the radio room of the command center when the Coral Sea and the Saratoga were both in the Indian Ocean. They were to go after Dictator Gaddafi, the head of Libya, and they did and won. But without much air support from other close countries.
Also Jeff loved having his family around and missed us so we were all thrilled and happy for the guys to take a Tiger Cruise, which is a chance to ride on the big ship for awhile then return to port. I got to meet them and cruise on it a little, too.
My son Jeff is very interested in politics and really cares about people’s rights and veterans affairs. He is thankful to have free insurance coverage and checkups and hospital privileges.
Makes him sad when Jeff has gone to other countries and they bad mouth Americans. They don’t know how special our country is compared to theirs.
I think they are beginning to see so many refugees wanting to come here. Sept. 11 broke his heart and changed his life as knew he wanted to help and honor all those lost. Get rid of the bad ones. If only we could!
God bless America and our military.
