St. Rita’s Medical Center hires neurosurgeon

LIMA — St. Rita’s Medical Center recently added a neurosurgeon to its staff.

Dr. Mario Ammirati is board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the Italian Board of Neurological Surgery. He joins the team at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Neurosurgery Center, located at 770 W. High St.

Prior to joining St. Rita’s, Ammirati was employed by the Department of Neurosurgery at The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, and was also a tenured professor at its Department of Neurological Surgery and Department of Radiation Oncology.

Blanchard Valley recognized for patient safety

FINDLAY — Blanchard Valley Hospital was recently honored with an A grade in the Fall 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

The Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D or F score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,600 U.S. hospitals were graded in Fall 2016, with 844 hospitals receiving an A.

Bridging the Gap to host Men’s Day

LIMA — Bridging the Gap will host a Men’s Day for area men’s ministries or groups from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Bradfield Community Center.

Two doctors will discuss colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and other men’s health issues during the event.

Bridging the Gap is striving to focus on major health concerns and disparities within the black community, according to a press release. The organization has held other health-related events in the past, including a health fair in April that focused on breast cancer awareness.

Interim HealthCare receives national recognition

LIMA — Interim HealthCare of Northwestern Ohio was awarded a top honor at the organization’s annual National Care Conference in October.

Interim’s Northwestern Ohio branch earned a HomeCare Elite status in 2016, ranking it among the top 25 percent of home care providers nationwide. This status identifies top Medicare-certified agencies and leaders that are ranked by performance, including quality of home health care, quality improvement, patient experience, process measurement implementation and financial management.

The Northwestern Ohio branch was also recognized for its performance in deficiency-free surveys, ranking as one of the top Interim branches nationwide.

The branch includes offices in Lima, Findlay, Bellefontaine, Defiance and Bryan.

Memory screening event coming to Lima

LIMA — A memory screening event will be held Nov. 15 at the Allen County Council on Aging, 215 N. Central. A certified screener will be available to assess individuals. To schedule an appointment, call 419-228-5135.
