LIMA — For most adults, going to prom is a memory stored at the back of their brain. Whether it was a good memory or not, depends on the person. DJ Upshaw who was born and raised in Lima is changing that. He now lives in Columbus and he is producing Lima’s Adult Prom, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Civic Center.
“It is just something I have been trying to plan out for a couple of years now, and now I have taken the time to produce it. Just trying to do something different in our community, in a more upscale environment. Something new to bring the community out,” said Upshaw.
The event is open to the community, but you must be 25 years of age and older to attend.
The theme for Lima’s Adult Prom is “A Night to Remember.”
“My sister came up with that. This will be a memorable event. This is an event that will go down in history,” Upshaw said.
There will be a special guest DJ from the Columbus Radio Station, 106.7, The Beat, DJIQ.
In addition to music and dancing, Upshaw has planned contests for people to enjoy.
“There will be a contest for Prom King and Queen. People will be given a ballot at the event and the people will choose the King and Queen,” said Upshaw. “There will be a best dressed contest as well, for both males and females.”
There will be a food buffet to enjoy and spiked punch.
“They couldn’t spike the punch for their high school prom. Now they can have spiked punch at the adult prom,” Upshaw said. “There will be a cash bar with other adult beverages available, too.”
And, there will be raffles.
“We will have giveaways like movie tickets, Westgate bowling, gas cards and gift cards,” said Upshaw.
And, he’s hoping this will become an annual event.
“I would like to do it annually in August. It will get better and better and better,” he said.
