VAN WERT — Strap on your bibs and pack your wet wipes, the 10th annual Van Wert Rib Fest is taking place from 5 p.m. to midnight today and 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday.
“We work hard at bringing good entertainment and excellent rib vendors. This is something the community looks forward to,” said Larry Lee, executive director of the Van Wert Area Convention Bureau. “We have local rib vendors and vendors from as far away as Pittsburgh.”
Weather is an important factor in the turnout, but last year the event averaged 5,000 to 6,000 over the two-day period.
As with all festivals, there will be entertainment.
“Friday at 6 p.m. Soft & Heavy will perform. This is a young group that plays original music and rock. At 8 p.m. Sierra Shame, from Fort Wayne, will be here. They also do pop/rock music. This is their farewell tour this year. We had them eight years ago. The members are breaking up and going their own way. At 6 p.m. Saturday from Defiance is Hot N’ Nasty and they are kind of a more country group, and then at 8 p.m. Mustang Sally, an all-girl country band takes the stage,” said Lee.
In addition to the musical entertainment, there are wiffleball tournaments Saturday for eighth grade and under and another for ninth grade and up. Pre-register by calling the office at 419-238-9378.
Other Saturday events are planned. too.
“We have cornhole at 9 a.m., a car show cruise-in, a live pig race at 4 p.m. and the United Way is presenting When Pigs Fly. People buy or adopt plastic pigs and they are dropped from overhead and the one closest to the target gets a prize and the one farthest from the target gets a prize. There will be a DJ all day Saturday too, said Lee.
“We have a beer tent and Jubilee Winery from Delphos will have wine tasting and wine smoothies,” said Lee.
