LIMA — A Shawnee Township firefighter known for his passion for the job was chosen as the Shawnee Optimist Club’s Respect for Law Award winner Wednesday.
Dustin Hunsaker won the award over more than 20 other firefighters in his agency. He was chosen by the brass of the department.
“There are so many deserving folks. I just got lucky to be the one picked,” he said.
Hunsaker has been a firefighter for Shawnee Township since 2010.
“I love my job. There’s not really a day that I don’t look forward to work. Every day is something different,” he said.
Hunsaker said the calls that really make him proud are the ones that he helps someone and makes a difference in someone’s life, such as helping to save a life.
Optimist Club member Dave Belton, who chairs the award nomination process, said the award honors a firefighter or police officer from Shawnee Township each year who stands out.
“It’s for people who are very concerned about the community and try to do a good job for it,” Belton said.
Belton said Hunsaker was a strong choice. Hunsaker is passionate about his job, a hard worker and really cares about the public, Belton said.
“He stood right out,” Belton said.
