COLUMBUS — Lima Central Catholic’s quickness proved to be too much for the size and power over Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph.

LCC won its second state boys basketball state championship with a 64-62 victory over Villa Angela-St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon at Ohio State’s Value City Arena.

LCC won its state title with a 25-4 record.

LCC’s Trey Cobbs made one of two free throws with 1.7 seconds left to give the T-Birds the 64-62 victory.

LCC was leading 63-59 when VASJ’s Carlton Bragg hit a 3-pointer to bring the Vikings within 63-62 with 4.5 seconds to go.

Jake Williams missed two free throws with 4.1 seconds left, but Williams got his own rebound, was blocked and Cobbs gobbled up the loose ball. Then, Cobbs was fouled and went to the line to sink one of two.

Martyce Kimbrough led the T-Birds with 22 points, hitting 7 of 11 from the field. He hit 4 of 7 on 3-pointers.

Xavier Simpson added 18 points for LCC. He scored eight points in the final quarter, including two runners in the lane. Simpson’s second runner gave LCC a 59-55 lead with 1:14 to go.

Jake Williams helped the T-Birds on the inside. Going against a 6-foot-8, 6-10 front line, Williams had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Bragg, the 6-10 slender leaper for VASJ, had 23 points, but only three rebounds. The 6-8 Dererk Pardon had 17 points and 15 rebounds.

LCC shot 52.3 percent from the field, while VASJ hit 50 percent.

LCC led 20-14 after the first quarter and 34-25 at the half. Kimbrough helped the T-Birds to the early lead with 18 points at the half.

LCC used a 2-3 zone defense in the second and third quarters, which helped slow down the VASJ offense.
