LIMA A Lima Senior High School teacher was placed on unpaid leave Monday after he was arrested and charged with attempted sexual battery.

Gary E. Jones, 59, appeared at a bond hearing Monday at Lima Municipal Court, where his bond was set at $5,000. He also was assigned preliminary hearing for Thursday.

Judge William Lauber ordered Jones stay off Lima Senior property and not have contact with students at the school.

Jones was arrested Friday evening and accused of committing the crime that same day. The charge accuses him of attempting to have sexual conduct with a student from the school.

Lima Police Lt. Jim Baker said the investigation is in its early stages. Baker said the alleged crime involved a student at the school but did not take place at school.

Lima Schools Superintendent Jill Ackerman said Jones was placed on unpaid leave Monday. Students in Lima Schools were on spring break last week, Ackerman said.

Jones has been employed with the Lima Schools since 2005. He is a health and physical education teacher, Ackerman said. He also was an assistant football coach at Lima Senior.
