Child rapist gets life sentence

November 14, 2012

LIMA — William Purdy was sent to prison Wednesday — possibly for the rest of his life — maintaining his innocence.

“I’m innocent. Other than that nothing more to say,” Purdy said.

Judge Richard Warren of Allen County Common Pleas Court sentenced Purdy to six life sentences on four counts of rape of a child under 10 and two counts of complicity to rape of a child under 10. For sentencing purposes, three of the charges were combined but stacked on top of each other so Purdy will not be eligible for parole until he serves 30 years.

Assistant Allen County Prosecutor Terri Kohlrieser said she would challenge any attempt Purdy would make to get out.

Kohlrieser said he was a predator who was on probation for raping another child when these crimes occurred.

“He needs to be taken out of society and not given the opportunity to do that again,” Kohlrieser said.

The crimes took place between 2003 and 2005 when the victim was between the ages of 5 and 7. Purdy’s former girlfriend, Trisha Steele, who testified against Purdy, was sentenced to five years in prison for rape.

Purdy’s attorney, Keith Schierloh, asked the judge to not penalizing Purdy for taking his case to trial. Warren said there was no such thing as a “trial tax” for exercising the constitutional right of challenging charges at trial.

Warren said it was too early to tell how much psychological damage was done to the victim.

“We don’t know what harm was caused,” Warren said. “I hope she gets the help she needs."
